Born into slavery, Bass Reeves was taken into the Civil War by George Reeves, the man who enslaved him, and forced into dangerous assignments protecting him and his men. Bass escaped and later spent fourteen years living among and defending the Creek Nation.

He went on to become a Deputy U.S. Marshal in Indian Territory—Hell’s Fringe—one of the most dangerous jurisdictions in the country. As a Deputy U.S. Marshal, Reeves pursued men other lawmen could not reach. Some surrendered after learning Bass had their warrants. Others learned too late that the old farmer, traveler, or harmless stranger before them was Deputy U.S. Marshal Bass Reeves.

He arrested more than 3,000 felons and killed only fourteen men, all in self-defense. Through the Civil War, fourteen years with the Creek Nation, more than three decades as a Deputy U.S. Marshal, and two years as a Muskogee police officer, Reeves was never struck by an arrow or a bullet.

Bass Reeves was a real-life superhero.

His life was larger than the badge. With his wife Jennie, he raised eleven children, owned land, built substantial wealth, and established a respected family name. He achieved independence, authority, and success in a country where many white Americans—including officials in Washington—could not accept a Black man with that kind of power. His accomplishments did not protect him from their hatred. For most, they made him a greater threat.

Bass’s history became tangled with legend, invention, and dramatization. The Lone Ranger, Hell on the Border, Lawmen: Bass Reeves, The Harder They Fall, and Corsicana brought versions of Bass or his legacy to the screen while reshaping the history around the man.

Bass Reeves: Hell’s Fringe was created for one purpose: to put Bass Reeves back at the center of his own story.
